WTMemory 2.2 · The guide

Your Mac makes more
sense from here.

Find what’s taking space, see what’s still running, and choose your next move. Start from the menu bar. Open the workspace when you want more detail.

01Open the menu-bar icon.

Click WTMemory in your menu bar.

02Find the problem.

Inspect storage, apps or open ports.

03Review your choice.

Read what happens before you act.

Update your app

  1. Open the WTMemory menu and choose Check for Updates. In older builds this is inside More.
  2. Review Sparkle's release notes, then install and relaunch. Your saved license and preferences are retained.
  3. If the old update window is hidden or the updater fails, download 2.2.3, quit WTMemory, and replace the app in Applications with the downloaded copy. Eject the disk image and open the app from Applications.

New versions show an update indicator in the menu and workspace. Notifications are optional. Automatic checks normally run daily, subject to your updater preferences and internet access. A standard macOS account may need an administrator to approve replacement of an app owned by another user.

Your Mac at a glance

Memory usage, available storage and macOS memory-pressure events give you context. From the menu bar, anyone can choose Clear Inactive Memory… for an optional manual reset; macOS may ask you to approve it, and apps may reload cached data afterward. High usage alone doesn't mean something is wrong. Storage recommendations cover supported locations, not every file on your disk.

Find big files

Choose a folder, then compare allocated sizes of its direct children and inspect up to 50 of its largest files. Explore a child folder, go up, rescan, or reveal entries in Finder. Hidden files are included. Symbolic links, redirected roots and other mounted volumes are skipped. The scan stops after a maximum of 250,000 entries or approximately 45 seconds; cancellation and unreadable locations produce partial results. Choose a smaller folder for detail. The 200 largest direct children are shown.

Disk Explorer reads files only. It never deletes files or makes them eligible for cleanup. APFS clones, compression and hard links affect allocated sizes; the totals are estimates rather than reclaimable space.

AI tools

Inspect supported model and cache locations alongside recognized AI processes and their CPU, memory and TCP endpoints. Process recognition uses explicit executable names; arbitrary Python tools and custom storage locations are not automatically identified. Use Disk Explorer for a custom model folder. Stop actions retain normal protection and confirmation rules.

Live readings

Overview displays CPU load across logical cores, battery capacity and power source where available, and throughput sampled from active en interfaces (typically Wi-Fi and Ethernet). It excludes VPN tunnel interfaces; readings are interface totals, not a speed test. Initial or reset network samples show Sampling. Process snapshots refresh while Running Apps or AI Tools is visible.

Clean up storage

  1. Scan supported locations. Search or filter the results.
  2. Read each item's description and estimated size. Reveal it in Finder if you're unsure.
  3. Select individual items, or select build caches. Nothing is selected automatically.
  4. Choose Review & move to Trash. The confirmation explains the selected items and consequences.
  5. Keep or restore files in Finder's Trash. Empty Trash yourself when you're sure, to reclaim disk space.

LM Studio current and legacy model folders are supported. Hugging Face cleanup is restricted to its Hub cache; its parent folder can contain credentials and is excluded. Custom or environment-configured locations are not automatically inferred. Models may include custom weights that aren't available for download. Back up valuable models first. Archives, Docker VM data, workspace databases and uncertain Application Support leftovers are excluded. Running tools can hold cache files open; close them before cleanup. Partial or inaccessible scans are labelled, and failed cleanup remains visible.

Save folders for next time

Exclude a location beside its scan result. Show excluded locations to include it again. With Pro, choose folders and click Save for Next Time. After another scan, Use Saved Folders selects only folders still in the results. Saved folders stay in Storage; use them after a fresh scan when you want the same cleanup targets again.

Apps & open ports

Inspect each main process's memory, CPU and PID. Developer processes are identified by executable name and display their executable location. TCP listening endpoints are shown when available, and Find What’s Using a Port provides a compact list from the menu. Stopping a listener stops the entire process, not just one port. They aren't automatically classified as abandoned or safe to stop. Protect an app with the lock control; protected apps cannot be quit through WTMemory.

Quit asks for confirmation and requests a normal exit. Force quit is an explicit separate option for apps and can lose unsaved work. There is no automatic force-quit fallback.

Keep Current App, Close the Rest remembers the app you were using before opening the menu. It lists the other regular apps, keeps the current app open for this action, preserves protected apps and background agents, and waits for your confirmation. Save your work first. Apps may show their own save dialogs. Unresponsive apps are never forced to close. To keep an app protected in future sessions, use its lock in Running Apps.

Daily reminders

Pro users can enable daily storage scans and reminders. Scans run at most once a day while WTMemory is running, with notification delivery controlled by macOS. Nothing is deleted or quit automatically. Pause the routine by switching it off.

Recent actions

The last 100 actions are stored locally. See what moved to Trash, what failed, and when an app quit was requested. Show in Trash works while the item is still at its recorded location. Estimated moved bytes are not a claim of actual disk space recovered.

Your license

WTMemory Pro is a one-time purchase for up to three activations with no expiration. Open Settings → Manage license to activate an emailed key. Check your purchase email and spam folder if the checkout return page didn't show it.

Temporary network failures retain saved purchased access. Deactivation keeps local activation until the server confirms success, so an offline attempt does not falsely claim a device slot was freed. If you no longer have access to an old Mac, contact support to resolve the activation slot.

Eligible returning users can start a one-time seven-day Pro preview from Overview or the license window. It starts only when selected. Inspection continues after it expires.

Permissions & advanced tools

Ordinary storage cleanup runs under your account. macOS may restrict a protected directory; WTMemory reports the issue. Start at Login defaults to on when 2.1 is first launched, where macOS permits it. It lives in Settings; you can turn it off there, and that choice is then retained. Clear Inactive Memory is available from the menu for all users and explains its administrator prompt before execution. It never runs as part of scheduled scans or general storage cleanup.
