CleanMyMac alternative for developers
Updated 13 October 2026
If you mainly need to find AI models, build caches, forgotten dev servers and memory-hungry apps, WTMemory is a smaller, developer-focused alternative to CleanMyMac: inspection is free and Pro is $9 USD once for up to 3 Macs. If you want malware removal, an app uninstaller and duplicate finding in one suite, CleanMyMac is the better fit, and this page says so plainly.
This comparison is written by the makers of WTMemory, so we stick to facts we could check on official pages, linked at the bottom.
How do WTMemory and CleanMyMac compare?
CleanMyMac details below come from MacPaw's official pages, checked 13 October 2026. Where MacPaw's feature page does not mention something, we say "not listed" rather than guess.
| WTMemory | CleanMyMac | |
|---|---|---|
| Price model | Free inspection. Pro $9 USD once, up to 3 Macs, all 2.x updates, 7-day trial. | Monthly or annual subscription, one-time purchase (updates within the current major version), or via Setapp. Feature page lists "starting at $3.33/month". |
| Focus | AI and developer workloads: model folders, build caches, running apps, open ports, memory. | Broad Mac maintenance: cleanup, protection, performance, applications. |
| Menu bar | Yes, menu-bar first, with a full workspace window. | Yes, a menu-bar component that can be turned on or off. |
| AI model folders | Ollama, Hugging Face Hub cache, LM Studio (current and legacy), ComfyUI models, selected Claude Code cache locations. | Not listed. |
| Developer caches | Xcode DerivedData, iOS DeviceSupport, Simulator caches; npm, pnpm, Yarn, Bun, Cargo, Gradle. Docker VM data and source code excluded. | Not listed specifically; general junk cleanup. |
| Open ports | Yes: TCP listening endpoints and the process behind each. | Not listed. |
| Memory and CPU | Memory usage, macOS pressure events, CPU, per-app memory and CPU. | Feature page mentions managing memory and CPU load. |
| Malware removal | No. | Yes. |
| App uninstaller | No. | Yes, including leftovers, plus an app updater. |
| Duplicates | No. | Yes, duplicate files and similar photos. |
| Review before Trash | Yes. Nothing is preselected; you review consequences, files move to Trash, and you empty Trash yourself. | See MacPaw's documentation. |
| Size | About 4.2 MB download, about 8.5 MB installed (measured). | System requirements list 320 MB of disk space. |
| macOS | macOS 12+, Apple Silicon and Intel. | macOS 11+. |
The size row compares a measured install with a published requirement. Those are different kinds of measurement, so read it as "WTMemory is very small", not as an exact ratio or a RAM comparison.
Who should pick CleanMyMac?
- You want one app for general maintenance: junk cleanup, malware scanning, uninstalling apps with their leftovers and updating software.
- You have a large photo library and want duplicate and similar-photo detection.
- You manage a family or non-technical Mac and prefer guided, all-in-one care.
- You already have Setapp, which includes CleanMyMac.
Who should pick WTMemory?
- Your disk fills with Ollama models, Hugging Face downloads, LM Studio models or ComfyUI checkpoints.
- You build with Xcode, Node, Rust or Gradle and want to review caches before they go. See Xcode DerivedData and npm, Yarn and pnpm caches.
- You keep finding old dev servers on port 3000 and want to see the process behind a port.
- You want to know which apps are using memory without being told your Mac is "slow". WTMemory shows usage and macOS pressure events and makes no speedup promises.
- You prefer a one-time $9 purchase and a tiny native app you can leave in the menu bar.
What you give up: WTMemory has no malware scanner, no uninstaller and no duplicate finder. Docker data is excluded from cleanup by design; use Docker's own commands from the Docker disk space guide.
How does WTMemory keep you in control?
- Review before Trash. You select individual items, read what happens, and confirm. Files go to the Trash so you can restore them. Symlink redirects and unrecognized targets are rejected.
- Confirmed app actions. Quits need confirmation, force quit is a separate explicit option, and protected apps stay running. "Keep Current App, Close the Rest" asks other apps to close normally after you review the list.
- Local by default. Scans and process details stay on your Mac. Licensing and update checks use the network. No app resource telemetry.
- Clear Inactive Memory. An optional manual macOS memory reset from the menu that may ask for administrator approval. It never runs automatically.
What are the free alternatives to CleanMyMac?
You may not need any app. macOS and Terminal already cover a lot:
- Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) shows memory, CPU, energy, disk and network per process. The Memory Pressure graph tells you whether RAM is really a problem. See how to check memory usage on a Mac.
- System Settings > General > Storage shows storage categories with recommendations and lets you review large documents and apps. See what System Data means and how to free up disk space.
- Terminal handles developer cleanup precisely:
npm cache clean --force,docker system dfand the prune commands, ollama rm <model>, andlsof -iTCP -sTCP:LISTEN -n -Pto find listening ports. Each guide linked here explains what a command deletes before you run it. - Finder with Go > Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G) reaches hidden folders such as
~/Library/Developer/Xcode/DerivedData.
WTMemory's inspection features, including Disk Explorer, AI Tools and Running Apps, are also free with no signup.

FAQ
Is WTMemory a full replacement for CleanMyMac?
No. WTMemory does not remove malware, uninstall apps or find duplicate files. It focuses on AI model folders, developer caches, running apps, memory and open ports. If you need a broad maintenance suite, CleanMyMac covers more ground.
How much does WTMemory cost compared with CleanMyMac?
WTMemory inspection is free, and Pro is $9 USD once for up to 3 Macs with all 2.x updates. MacPaw offers CleanMyMac as a monthly or annual subscription, a one-time purchase, or through Setapp; check MacPaw's site for current prices.
Does WTMemory delete files automatically?
No. Nothing is selected automatically. You select items, read the consequences and confirm, and files are moved to the Trash. Emptying the Trash is your own separate decision. Scheduled scans never delete files or stop apps.
Can WTMemory clean Docker data?
No. Docker VM data is excluded from cleanup by design. Use Docker's own prune commands, which are explained in the WTMemory Docker disk space guide.
What is the best free CleanMyMac alternative?
macOS already includes Activity Monitor for memory and CPU, and System Settings > General > Storage for disk usage. A few Terminal commands cover developer caches. WTMemory's inspection features are also free.
